St. John's students make it a clean sweep through the neighborhood

Earth Day was celebrated by students from St. John the Baptist School in Kenmore who spent a few hours cleaning up parts of the community near their school.  While new families visited the school during an Open House, dozens of St. John's fifth through eighth graders, brooms and rakes in hand, fanned out into the neighborhool. They also collected newspapers, bottles and cans for recycling.

During the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, April 26, Father Richard Reina, St. John's pastor, blessed the students. They then cleaned up the parish property, the grounds of an apartment complex across from the school on Englewood and the Colvin-Highland Plaza.

The St. John's students are members of Imagine, a social justice group.  Imagine members have also taken part in the Sleepout for the Homeless and are scheduled to participate in the upcoming Ride for Roswell.

Students also sold hot dogs, lemonade and baked goods. Proceeds will be donated to the Loaves and Fishes Dining Room which offers free lunches to the needy at the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo.

Dear Friends,

St. John's is a wonderful neighborhood school that enjoys a long and rich tradition.  It has provided both the faith development and academic excellence for thousands of area children since 1931.   As alumni of all ages gather for reunions, their stories continue to be told recounting very happy memories and how well they had been prepared for the challenges of high school.   We want you to know about St. John's and to think about it as a choice for your children's growth in faith and knowledge.  It's never too early to prepare for their future.

Fr. Richard Reina, Pastor                                                           Mrs. Cynthia Jacobs, Principal
